Birthday Wishlist

So I have some serious news … I’m turning 18 in just over a week! In one weeks time, I will legally be an adult citizen of Australia. Cocktails and tattoos here I come! Seriously though, I am considering getting a tattoo on my back saying ‘healthy mind, body, spirit’. What do you think? Too cliché? And I was thinking maybe the ‘mind body spirit’ part in all different “fonts”? Ahh anyway, I still have a while to figure it all out.

Until then, here are my top five birthday wishlist must-haves for 2014 –

1. Versace – Pour Femme Eau De Parfum

versace pour femme

I’ll admit, this is going to be a refill as I have already used every last drop of my bottle. But, this just feels like … me. You know when you find a perfume that’s just completely perfect for you in every way? Well, for me, this is that scent. It just smells magnificent and works so well with my skin. Trust me, it’s pure bliss!

2. ‘Vegan Yum Yum’ by Lauren Ulm

vegan yum yum

Okay, so a bit of a crazy title, but I’ve heard great things about this book and it looks like it’s got some fantastic recipe ideas. And you can never have too many vegan recipe ideas! Eating clean can be pretty tough in a nation obsessed with meat pies, paddlepop ice-creams and huge slabs of steak as the center-piece at every family barbecue…

3. Nike – LunarEclipse 4: Women’s

nike lunareclipse 4

So I don’t really know anything about trainers, but these look pretty comfortable to me. My feet are crying out for some good new shoes for the gym, and the fact that they look great can’t hurt right?

4. Dermalogica – Skin Resurfacing Cleanser

skin resurfacing cleanser

I am a massive fan of Dermalogica, and this beautiful cleanser has been on my list of must-haves for a while. My skin is starting to complain a little over all the Easter chocolate, and I think it’s time for me to give it some love, don’t you?

5. Cue – Jacquard Zip Front Dress

C9001-989_480X570NEW

I am absolutely in love with Cue. With almost all of their clothing made in Australia, and working closely with TCFUA to maintain ethical standards, I always feel good about purchasing their goods. And all of the fabrics and cuts are so beautiful, even if they don’t always suit my fuller figure. But I can always find something beautiful to drool over. This leopard lace dress with a flattering fitted bodice, full skirt and tulle lining is rather pricey at $349, but a girl can dream can’t she?

So there you have a few of my birthday picks for 2014 (trust me, that’s not all, I have a list the size of a dictionary…). I actually can’t believe this year has gone so fast. It seems only a few months ago I was organizing my fifties-film inspired birthday picnic with pink macaroons and faux cocktails. Now I’m booking restaurants and sourcing out some actual cocktails for a great night with the girls. Oh my, how time flies!

Have a lovely week, beautiful!

De-Stress and Be Mindful

Image

So I finally bought a yoga mat and exercise ball! They’ve been on my ‘to buy’ list for so long now and I finally snatched them up for a huge bargain the other day. Yoga and pilates here I come! I have a couple of pilates DVD’s that I’m looking at buying to get me started but if anyone has any suggestions I would be really grateful. There’s actually pilates AND yoga classes held at my gym and, after two years of going there, I still haven’t managed to attend a single class. Ah hem, well anyway, now I can do it from the comfort of my own home! All I need now is some motivation, some great DVDs and some spare time in the midst of my mid-semester uni exams. Bring it on, I say!

Image

Recently I’ve been practicing some ‘mindfulness meditation’ every morning for about five minutes. I have this great app on my iPhone called ‘The Smiling Mind’ app and it’s soooo relaxing! There are a whole heap of different routines and each one just helps you to pay attention to your body and really understand your place in the world … if that makes any sense! I’ve heard of mindfulness before and there are so many good reports of how it helps people in different areas of their life. In this busy, modern world we live in, sometimes we just don’t even think about the simplest things and all the details get lost in the gigantic puzzle that is everyday life. There’s also a book I want to read on mindfulness called “Mindful Learning” by Dr Craig Hassed and Dr Richard Chambers, which is basically about mindfulness in relation to education. I could do with this one at the moment to be honest, exams are stressing me out!

????????

Would love to hear of any books you recommend on mindfulness and, as I said before, any pilates/yoga DVDs you would recommend.

Love as always,

Valentine Flicks

Image

Valentines Day is upon us yet again. And yet again … no valentine for me. But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the day. My mother has this tradition of leaving little valentine gifts for my sister and I. Invariably it is a sweet card with a little message and some delectable (and expensive) chocolate. Just to let us know that we are loved. How sweet is that? This year was no exception. I awoke to find a beautiful black and white card picturing a sophisticated lady dressed in white against an elaborate background, and the words “Happy Valentines beautiful Aalyn, you are well loved” written inside. Accompanying this was a large square of the most delicious dark chocolate – ‘Willie’s Cacao: Madagascan Gold’. The only ingredients are ‘Cacao mass, raw cane sugar, and cacao butter’. And it was absolutely beautiful, so smooth and rich.

Image Image Image

As it’s the day to celebrate romance, love and devotion, I thought I might share some of my favourite valentine flicks. As you may or may not know, I’m a huge fan of film and I literally have a list on my laptop of movies I must see before I die … and it’s growing longer rather than shorter. Despite this, the list of romances I have seen could fill a book. I have to say that I am rather a fan of the awfully cliched ‘chick flick’, but also appreciate classic love stories. So here is a little bit of a mix of my favourites (in no particular order):

1. Roman Holiday. This has to be my favourite Audrey film. The first time I saw it I was only around 7 or 8, but loved it from the first. My Grandma had a collection of Audrey Hepburn classics and we used to always beg her to ‘watch Audrey’ whenever we stayed over. Her favourite was Sabrina, and so was my sisters, but I always had a soft spot for Roman Holiday. Don’t you just love the guitar scene on the boat?

Image

2. Love Actually. This is my family’s favourite Christmas movie. We watch it every year, as I mentioned in a previous post. I love the idea of different people’s lives all woven together and interconnected. My favourite ‘sub-story’ was always Daniel (Liam Neeson) and Sam (Thomas Sangster). Their journey is just so beautiful, and always touches my heart.

Image

3. Notting Hill. Sweet, funny and adorable, how could you not like this film? I’ve always liked Hugh Grant, and this has to be one of my favourites.

Image

4. Pride and Prejudice. Of course, I had to include Elizabeth and Darcy. Whether it’s the 1995 classic mini-series (my first introduction to the world of Jane Austen) or the 2005 Joe Wright version, I just love it all.

Image

5. The ‘Before’ series. That is, ‘Before Sunrise’, ‘Before Sunset’, and (recently) ‘Before Midnight’. I realise that this is actually three different movies, but they’re all so closely connected that it almost feels like one continuous film. They may not be to everyone’s tastes, but I really love the slow-moving, naturalistic style of these films. It almost feels like you’re watching a documentary at times.

Image

6. Dirty Dancing. This is a recent discovery for me. After years of hearing how great it was, I watched it for the first time a few months ago. At first, I wasn’t sure why everyone loved it so much. However, after watching it again with my sister, I fell in love. It took me a while to grasp the magic of this classic film, but once I did, it quickly earned a place in my list of ‘all-time favourites’.

Image

7. Amelie. I watched this for the first time when I was around 10, and loved it from the first. This is such a quirky, eclectic, sweet, colourful film and I absolutely adore it!

Image

8. Moulin Rouge. I first watched this (again) when I was around 10 or 11, and was rather shocked at the crude nature of this over-the-top film. However, once over the shock of the overt sexuality, I became entranced at the heart-breaking passion and yearning of these two lovers. I’m not a major fan of musicals, but this is definitely an exception. A genius film, and a beautiful story, this one always leaves me red-eyed and heart-broken.

Image

9. Some Like it Hot. Not so much romantic as absolutely hilarious, this is my favourite Marilyn Monroe film. It never fails to leave me in fits, and has (in my opinion) one of the best ending lines in movie history. Definitely a must-see!

Image

10. Leap Year. One of my mum’s favourites, the scenery in this film always moves me. Oh and the story is great too! Funny, romantic, and sentimental … and you’ve gotta love the Irish accent!

Well, happy valentines beautiful!

Sportsgirl University OOTD

Image

University – scary or exciting? Liberating or imprisoning? I haven’t quite made up my mind about it all yet. Only two weeks to go before orientation week, and then … it all begins. I went to get my ID card today – a horrid experience! It doesn’t seem to matter how long you spend on your hair, makeup and various poses, it always seems to turn out all wrong. And today was no exception. If only you could submit your own photo, or at least if they would let you see it before they print it to check if it’s all okay. But no, it’s just one big nasty surprise. Oh well, it’s done now. You may not be surprised to know that I met up with my girls today clad all in Sportsgirl gear. I know, I’m rather pathetic. I just love their clothes so much, and everything I’ve ever bought has proved to be worthy of frequent use. So I shan’t defend myself any more. You may have to get used to seeing a rather extravagant amount of Sportsgirl clothes from me! Oh and apologies for the marks on the shirt, I have no idea what they are but I just noticed them.

This was my outfit for today –

OOTD and The Flying Nun

Image

I thought I’d share with you all one of my favourite casual outfits (I literally wear this ALL the time). It’s proved to be extremely versatile and I can wear it to so many different occasions. I really love the simplicity of this outfit and I always get complimented whenever I wear it. The top and black cami are both from Review and the shorts are from Jacqui-E. The shoes are Diana Ferrari and the bag is the same as in the last OOTD (from Sportsgirl).

Today I went out for breakfast with my mum and grandparents at a cafe in Samford called ‘The Flying Nun’. It’s basically a converted chapel with tables inside and outside. There are trees absolutely everywhere and it’s a beautiful place to just sit and relax. It did get VERY busy though at around 10 o’clock, good thing we made a reservation! I decided on a simple meal of toasted sourdough with smashed avocado and olive oil, with a spritz of lemon juice and salt and pepper on top. I have to say I was a little disappointed. It seems extremely difficult to find a good avocado on toast these days. Probably because avocado isn’t in season. Mine was definitely underripe. Oh well, the coffee was great and I even got a little chocolate-covered coffee bean on the side. How nice!
